Dr. Schinkel Q & A:
Dr. Mary Schinkel came to Pekin and joined ProHealth Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) in 2015. Recently, she sat down with Checking In to share her perspectives on patient care, quality and community service.
Checking In: What is a typical week like at a busy ENT practice?
Dr. Schinkel: Each week provides a range of office visits, office procedures and operating room surgery. I also help in the care for hospitalized patients at UnityPoint Health-Pekin. We see patients of any age. You are never too young or too old to receive help from an ENT surgeon.
Checking In: Can you tell our readers a little more about the wide range of services you provide?
Dr. Schinkel: For issues related to the ears, we treat infections, drainage, loss of hearing, wax build-up, ringing, dizziness and growths on the outer parts of the ears. For the nose, we focus on allergy and sinus problems, stuffiness, post-nasal drainage, growths on the outer part of the nose and broken noses. Our throat care includes neck masses, thyroid nodules, sore throats, tonsil infections, snoring, trouble swallowing, cough, hoarseness and other voice changes.
Checking In: How does your work align with Progressive Health Systems’ commitment to providing the best possible patient experience?
Dr. Schinkel: We love ENT care and enjoy our work. We hope to always make our patients feel comfortable and relaxed during their visits. We strive to answer all questions possible and help in any way we are able. Quality is of the utmost importance to me, and we are working every day to continue our current 99 percent patient satisfaction rating.
Checking In: What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Dr. Schinkel: I love what I do because I have the opportunity to improve the lives of patients of all age ranges with such a variety of different issues. I would love to be able to see people the exact day they wish to be seen. However, as the practice continues to grow we are always looking at ways to get patients in to be seen as quickly as possible without sacrificing quality.
Checking In: What would you say to a member of the community who might be considering Progressive Health Systems for medical care?
Dr. Schinkel: I have been here a year but already feel right at home. This is a great community to live and work in. I enjoy what I do, and I know I made the right choice for my career. I feel you would make the right choice coming to see me at ProHealth ENT.
